Integrated Resiliency Analysis

John R. Hummel, Ph.D. is the lead for Integrated Resiliency Analyses in the Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division at the Argonne National Laboratory. He is the developer of the Analysis of Resiliency for Integrated System Effectiveness (ARISE) framework for assessing societal and regional resiliency. He has over 30 years of experience in developing and using modeling and simulation applications in a variety of military domains, such as environmental representations, logistics, simulation architectures, and the impacts of climate change on National Security.  He led the development of efforts to create a framework for assessing societal and regional resiliency and has also supported activities analyzing critical resilient infrastructures.  He has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Michigan and a M.S. in Meteorology and B.S. with Honors Option in Engineering Science from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Hummel is also a Senior Fellow with the Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering of the University of Chicago and the Northwestern-Argonne Institute for Science and Engineering.


Donald Kim Erskine

Senior Infrastructure Resilience and Threat Analyst Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division

Mr. Erskine currently is with Argonne National Laboratory.  Kim is a retired United States Navy SEAL Officer and National and Homeland Security professional.  He has more than thirty years of experience in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence, critical infrastructure protection and preparedness planning.

Following a distinguished Naval career, he served fifteen years as a consultant and Senior Federal Employee with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Prior to joining Argonne, he served as the Office of Infrastructure Protection Regional Director and Chief of Protective Security for Federal Region 1 (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT). 

Mr. Erskine serves as a Civil Expert on Civil-Military Cooperation and Energy Infrastructure Security for NATO’s Civil Emergency Planning Committee and provides analysis of critical infrastructure vulnerabilities to hybrid threats for the Center of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in Helsinki, Finland.


Chaitanya (CK) Kaligotla

Postdoctoral Appointee at Argonne National Laboratory

Chaitanya Kaligotla (“CK”) is a Postdoctoral Appointee at Argonne National Laboratory. He is part of the Social, Behavioral, and Decision Science Group, in the the Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division of the Lab. He also has a joint appointment at the Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering, at The University of Chicago.

His work broadly involves studying and modeling the effects of information and rumor diffusion on social behavior, particularly on social media and other large scale urban networks. His work is interdisciplinary and cross methodological in nature, and seeks to improve understanding of the dynamics of social organization, behavior, and associated phenomena through information-based decision modeling techniques using computational modeling and  complex adaptive system approaches. 

CK earned his Ph.D. in Decision Sciences at INSEAD, France, where his work examined the dynamics of social media interactions. CK also has a diverse industry background in management consulting, analytics, and manufacturing operations around the world.


Joseph J. Leonard Jr.

Principal Consultant with the PENTA Consortium

CDR Joseph J. Leonard Jr. (USCG, ret.) is a 30-year veteran of the Coast Guard and is a Principal Consultant with the PENTA Consortium, LLC. He serves as the chair of the Greater Harris County Local Emergency Planning Committee and actively serves in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He holds designations as a Master Exercise Practitioner, Master Continuity Practitioner, Certified Emergency Manager, Certified Homeland Protection Professional, and Certified Port Executive.  He has a BA in History from the Virginia Military Institute and an MS in Engineering Technology from Murray State University.


Roland Varriale

Cyber Security Analyst at Argonne National Laboratory

Roland Varriale is a cyber security analyst at Argonne National Laboratory focusing on the security of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) systems as well as general cyber risk and resilience. He serves as the Academic Chair of the Secret Service’s Chicago branch of the Electronic Crimes Task Force and contributes to Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, and Department of Energy projects. Roland is also a lecturer for the Threat and Response Management Program at the University of Chicago’s Graham School. Prior to his work at Argonne, Roland was a business analyst, high school teacher, and system administrator; which motivates his holistic, systems-based analysis of vulnerabilities and risks.  Roland has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Manhattan College and a Master of Science Degree in Software Engineering from the University of Scranton.


Duane R. Verner

Manager, Resilience Assessment Group at Argonne National Laboratory

Duane Verner is the Resilience Assessment Group Leader within the Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He oversees staffing and technical assignments, including hybrid threat analysis, critical infrastructure vulnerability assessments, system modeling, and dependency analysis. He has provided methodology development and project implementation support to the United States Department of Homeland Security Regional Resiliency Assessment Program since its inception in 2009.

Duane regularly contributes to the international resilience and security research community through publications and trans-Atlantic collaboration, including serving as an active member of the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats and as a delegate to the OECD High Level Risk Forum. In 2018, Duane was appointed as a Civil Expert for NATO’s Civil Emergency Planning Committee to serve as an adviser on all aspects of regional energy resilience, including in response to hybrid threats. Prior to his position with Argonne, he was a project manager for a private sector engineering firm in New York City, working in the transportation, homeland security, and defense sectors.

He is a certified planner and holds an MA in Urban Planning.
